What Is Invoice Factoring?

Invoice factoring lets you sell your outstanding B2B invoices to a factoring company at a discount in exchange for immediate cash. Instead of waiting 30, 60, or 90 days for your customers to pay, you get up to 90% of the invoice value upfront — typically within 24 hours. When your customer pays the invoice, you receive the remaining balance minus a small factoring fee.

The key advantage: approval is based on your customers' credit, not yours. If your customers are creditworthy businesses that pay their invoices, you can qualify for factoring even with poor personal credit, limited time in business, or recent bankruptcies.

At Blackburn Business Capital, we connect you with factoring companies from our 100+ lending partner network who specialize in your industry — whether you're a trucking company, staffing agency, manufacturer, contractor, or any B2B business with outstanding receivables.

Know Your Options
Two Ways to Unlock Your Receivables
Invoice factoring and AR financing both turn unpaid invoices into cash — but they work differently. Here's how to tell which one is right for you.
Most Common

Invoice Factoring

You sell your invoices to the factoring company. They own the receivable, advance you up to 90% immediately, and collect payment directly from your customer when it's due.

✓Approval based on your customers' credit — not yours
✓Bad credit, tax liens, bankruptcies — still eligible
✓Factor handles collections for you
✓Funded in 24 hours or less
−Your customer is notified (unless non-notification program)
Best for: Trucking, staffing, construction, manufacturing — any B2B business with slow-paying customers
More Discreet

AR Financing (Invoice Financing)

You borrow against your invoices as collateral. You retain ownership of the receivables and still collect from your customers — the lender never contacts them.

✓Customers never know — 100% confidential
✓You maintain all customer relationships
✓You keep control of collections
−Your credit matters more (typically 620+)
−Slightly more documentation required
Best for: Professional services, agencies, and businesses that want to keep their financing private from clients

Industries That Rely on Factoring
Built for Businesses That Invoice
If your business sends invoices and waits for payment, factoring eliminates that wait and turns receivables into working capital.

Trucking & Transportation

Freight bills paid in 30-60 days? Factor them today. Cover fuel, maintenance, and driver payroll without waiting on brokers and shippers to pay.

Staffing & Temp Agencies

You pay your workers weekly but bill clients monthly. Factoring bridges that gap so you never miss payroll while waiting on client payments.

Construction & Contractors

General contractors and subs waiting on progress payments or retainage. Factor completed work invoices to fund materials and crews for the next phase.

Manufacturing & Distribution

Large orders with net-60 or net-90 terms? Factor invoices to fund production of the next batch without waiting for the last one to get paid.

Healthcare & Medical

Waiting on insurance reimbursements or government payments? Medical receivable factoring accelerates cash flow from slow-paying payers.

Professional Services & Consulting

Consulting firms, IT services, marketing agencies — any B2B service business that invoices clients on net terms can benefit from factoring.

Why Choose Invoice Factoring
Turn Receivables Into Revenue
Invoice factoring isn't a loan — it's accelerating money that's already owed to you. Here's why businesses choose it.

Cash in 24 Hours

Submit an invoice, get up to 90% of its value deposited the same day. No more waiting 30, 60, or 90 days for customers to pay.

Your Credit Doesn't Matter

Approval is based on your customers' creditworthiness, not yours. Bad credit, bankruptcies, tax liens — they don't disqualify you if your customers pay.

Grows With You

Your factoring line increases as your invoicing volume grows. More sales means more invoices means more available capital — no reapplication needed.

Not a Loan — No Debt

Factoring isn't borrowing. You're selling an asset (your receivables) for immediate cash. It doesn't add debt to your balance sheet.

Collections Handled for You

Many factoring companies handle invoice collection on your behalf, saving you time and reducing the headache of chasing late payments.

Spot or Ongoing Factoring

Factor one invoice when you need it (spot factoring) or set up an ongoing facility for all your invoices. You choose the structure that fits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Invoice Factoring FAQ
How does invoice factoring actually work?

You deliver goods or services and send your customer an invoice as normal. Instead of waiting for them to pay, you submit that invoice to the factoring company. They advance you up to 90% of the invoice value within 24 hours. When your customer pays the invoice (to the factor), you receive the remaining balance minus a factoring fee of 1-5%.

Will my customers know I'm using factoring?

In most cases, yes — your customer will be notified to remit payment to the factoring company instead of directly to you. However, some factors offer non-notification factoring where your business name remains on all correspondence. This is something we can discuss based on your preference and the programs available.

What's the difference between recourse and non-recourse factoring?

With recourse factoring, if your customer doesn't pay the invoice, you're responsible for buying it back. With non-recourse factoring, the factoring company assumes the risk of non-payment (usually only for credit-related defaults, not disputes). Non-recourse typically has slightly higher fees but protects you from customer default.

What types of invoices can be factored?

B2B invoices for completed work or delivered goods are eligible. The invoices must be for services already rendered or products already delivered — not future work. Government invoices, commercial invoices, and freight bills are all commonly factored. Consumer (B2C) invoices are generally not eligible.

How is factoring different from invoice financing?

With factoring, you sell your invoices to the factor — they own the receivables and typically collect payment directly from your customers. With invoice financing (also called AR lending), you borrow against your invoices as collateral but retain ownership and collection responsibility. Factoring is simpler but your customer interacts with the factor. Invoice financing is more discreet but requires stronger credit.

How much does factoring cost?

Factoring fees typically range from 1% to 5% of the invoice value, depending on your volume, your customers' credit quality, and how quickly they pay. Higher volume and faster-paying customers get lower rates. For example, a 2% fee on a $10,000 invoice means you'd receive approximately $9,800 total ($9,000 upfront + $800 when customer pays minus $200 fee).

Is there a minimum volume requirement?

It depends on the factor. Some require minimum monthly volumes of $10,000 or more for ongoing factoring programs. However, spot factoring (one invoice at a time) is available with some of our partners with no minimum volume. We'll match you with a factor that fits your invoicing volume.

Can I factor invoices if I have a tax lien or bankruptcy?

In many cases, yes. Since factoring is based on your customers' credit rather than yours, tax liens and prior bankruptcies don't automatically disqualify you. However, some factors may require that active tax liens be subordinated. We work with factors who specialize in distressed situations and can often find solutions where traditional lenders cannot.
